RHYTHM ESSENCE & CYMBAL WORKSHOP

Purpose of Workshops:

 

To strengthen your understanding of the rhythms and music that you dance and play cymbals to.

 

If you want to be good, there is no substitute for knowing the music!

Rhythm Essence and Cymbals. . . Part 1

 

Saturday, June 23,  

1.     excercises to strengthen cymbal technique

2.     basic music theory

3.     connecting movement and cymbals

4.     solid work with some members of the “Baladi family of rhythms”. . baladi, maqsoum, “walking” maqsoum, and saidi

 

$60 for 4 hour workshop 

Master Class:  registration at 3:15pm, class from 3:30 – 5:30pm    )

(no prerequisite for cymbal players.  Drummers with at least intermediate skills welcomed.) 

 

1.     dissecting phrase by phrase, a belly dance classic, “Lailet Hob”, often used as an entrance piece.

2.     learning to play all the rhythms involved in the piece.

3.     learning the order of the various rhythms and melodies that make up the piece.

4.     experimenting with dance steps that would be fitting for some segments of the piece.

 

Note:  It is strongly advised that students purchase Mary Ellen’s Gems of the Middle East cd, volume 1 and its rhythmical analysis book containing Lailet Hob and 14 other popular pieces . . . . available at the workshop.

Sunday, June 24th, 9:30am registration, class from 10:00am to 3:00pm with an hour lunch break in the middle.

 

Note:  suggested, but not required, that students take Part 1.

 

1.                 review of some of the key points taught in Part I.

2.                 solid variations for Baladi.

3.                 work with more members of the “Baladi family of rhythms” masmoudi and fallahi.

4.                 muting technique and its use in the bolero rhythm and other related rhythms.

5.                 time permitting, requests from students for clarification on any musical or rhythm matters.

   

 

Master Class:      $30 (2 hour workshop)
