Skin Care

Every so often we need to be reminded of the basic steps of skin care. We tend to forget things, get lazy and pick up bad habits.

  1. Wash at least twice a day- A daily cleansing routine should happen in the morning and evening. Don’t get lazy and sleep in your makeup. Your skin will suffer greatly, be puffy the next morning, and you will have aged 7 days over night!
  2. No more than 5 minutes- don’t get caught up in multi-layers of product. The process is quick and simple.

3- 4 steps- the basic 3-step routine is cleanse, tone, and moisturize. The fourth step can be any special treatment you might need such as, vitamin C serum, sunscreen, or Retin-A

4- Use eye cream always- the delicate eye area needs special protection 24/7. Try using your baby finger to massage it in a clockwise motion across the lid and underneath the eye 20-30 times. Your finger warms the product releasing the active ingredients.

  1. Use toner- toner removes any residue and allows moisturizer to penetrate more easily. For oily skin, toner will calm the oil glands. Always use a non-alcohol formula on a quilted cotton pad. Rub in circles covering the entire face and neck. Toner removes traces of mascara and eye make up.  Good old fashioned witch hazel is good for most everyone
  2. A.M. Use sunscreen- SPF 15 or higher if you will be outside. Use an oil free formula for less bulk on the skin. Neutrogena makes several different formulas that are very light weight.
  3. P.M. use a night cream- your skin repairs itself while you sleep. Use a cream suited to your needs such as wrinkle reducing, acne fighting, brightening the skin, fighting dryness etc. Give your skin the tools it needs to help it repair itself while you sleep

Bronzed Skin -
No Nothing says summer more than bronzed skin. Using the right tone of barely there bronzer can give an instant glow of health.
To ensure a natural look, don’t over do it. Use a matte bronzer without too much orange, and no shimmer. Natural skin looks best tinted, but not sparkly.
Begin by using a foundation to match the darker end of your skin tones. Highlight around the eyes with a lighter toned foundation. If the eye area is too tan, you will look tired or older. Set it with a translucent powder. Be sure the powder has a tan or yellow tint; no pinks.
Next, apply bronzer on the apples of the cheeks, under cheekbones, across the forehead, on the bridge of the nose, and a little on the chin. Blend well and be sure to use a self tanner so your body matches your face.
To accent your new coloring, use a bronze toned lipstick or gloss

Eyelining _ The Perfect Line Don’t you just love those exotic “cat eyes”?  They are a trademark of the classic belly dancer, with perfectly extended lines.  Well, achieving the perfect line can be very frustrating.  Here is a simple technique to help you get the perfect line every time.

Start on the bottom.  Line the lower lid first and use it to set your boundaries for the top line.  Start at the inner corner and draw a soft line out and up on the diagonal.  Use the shape of the lower lid to determine the angle.  Just keep drawing and extend the line in the same angle as the lid.  You can now use that line as a marker
For the next step, it is important to keep the eyes open. Determine if you want one or two lines.  If you want one, start at the end of the underline and draw backwards toward the lid.  Aim for the outer third to quarter of the top lid.  You will have an extended triangle.
You can now fill it in with liner, leave it open, or fill in with a contrasting color.  If you want the double-line look, again start at the end of the top line, one-quarter inch away.  Draw backwards toward the top lid at a more parallel angle.  Aim for the middle to outer third of the top lid.  You will have a nifty space between the lines, which you can fill in with white or a color for even more drama. Once the two lines are set, draw from the inner corner of the top lid outward and connect to the top line.
Keeping the eyes open assures you will get the right angle.  If you have creases or skin in the way, just draw right over them.  The line will create the illusion and camouflage the imperfections

How to Apply Liquid Foundation - Pour a dime size circle of foundation into the palm of your hand and let it warm up and adjust to your skin chemistry.  Use a sponge and take a tiny bit from the edge of the circle.  Start at the forehead and blend small amounts downward.  Be sure to get in and around the edges of the nose and corner of eyes.  Apply the foundation over the eyelids and the lips.  Foundation not only evens the skin tone, but also acts as a glue to hold color in place.  Eyes, lips, and cheeks will last much longer when applied over foundation. Are your lips dry no matter what the weather?  Many women have dry lip problems ranging from a slight tightness, to cracking and peeling.  They cake on Chapstick and other similar products and nothing seems to help.  An understanding of how lips are made will help to remedy the situation.

Set with a good lightweight translucent powder by using a powder puff to press the powder into the skin.  Dust off the excess and apply to eye area with a powder brush of about a 1-2 inch diameter.  The larger fluff brushes are too big to get into the nooks and crannies of the face.  The proper amount and application of powder guarantees the staying power of your foundation.

Lip Care -Lips have no oil or sweat glands and no hair follicles.  They are constantly unprotected and exposed to the elements.  They can’t moisturize themselves because they are a different type of skin.  They are naturally prone to dryness if left unprotected.  When speaking, most people lick their lips occasionally.  Each time this happens, the evaporation of moisture dries out the lips.

Lips need protection everyday. Over the counter products are basically wax sealants. The lips do not get worse, and they do not get beter.  Lips need penetrating moissture from oils such as jojoba, almond, vitamin e, shea butter, etc.  They also need moisture form the inside from water consumption and essential fatty acids.  Flax seed capsules are wonderful for curing dry skin anywhere on the body. Taken with meals, they provide some of the "good" oils our bodies need.

Daily maintenance includes brushing the lips as you brush your teeth to remove any flaky skin and applying moisture two to three times daily.  Next, apply foundation and powder to the lips and seal in the moisture with lipstick or gloss.  A good quality lip balm or treatment will work in just a few days.  When lips get the moisture they need, they heal very quickly.  Rich hand lotion works very well also.  Basically, never leave lips unprotected.
Certain lip products cause dryness.  The long lasting lip stains contain alcohol and dry out the lips.  Matte lipstick can also be drying.  Use moist creamy formulas with vitamins and glossy colors.

Lose 5 Years Off Your Face -Lift your brows—raising the brow arch takes years off your face.  We lifted a few in the make up workshop with terrific results.  Tweeze under the main hairline and under the inner corner.  Lift about 1/8-1/4 inch for best results.

Use a lighter highlight—off-white, gold, or peach will instantly lift the whole eye area.  Apply from brow to lash line, also to the inner corner of eye.

Don’t line the top lid—try leaving off the top liner.  This can weigh down the eye.  Try a light lid instead, with a neutral taupe in the crease.

Use concealer—cover under-eye circles with a flesh-toned concealer two shades lighter than your foundation.  Apply over the foundation, just on the inner eye circle.  Place it in a “C” shape from the side of the nose around and under the inner corner of the eye.  Do not apply to outer corners where crow’s feet live.

Use an under-eye lightener—eye creams with under-eye lighteners or a slice of raw potato, yes potato, under the eye for 10 minutes a day.
Use a lightening cream—sunspots can age the face, so lighten them gradually.  Cover them in the mean time with concealer.
Use cucumber for bags -- while you are in a food mood, get a couple of slices of cucumber and lay them on undereyebags for 10 minutes to reduce puffiness
Use surgical tape—smooth creases while you sleep by putting surgical tape on them.  Smooth the wrinkle out, apply a small piece of tape to hold the skin flat, and sleep away creases.
Change foundation formula—use a lighter texture that does not sit in creases or dry the skin.  My “minimal” line is perfect for this.  Looks invisible, yet covers flaws.  It contains skin softeners and sunscreen

UNDERLINED EYES  - This look is very effective for looking sexy without going over the top.  It uses contrast to create attention-getting eyes
1)     Choose a neutral sheer shadow.  Peaches, yellows, rusts, taupes, and gold make good choices.  Apply the shadow over the entire lid from lash line to brow.
2)     Use a soft liner pencil in black or brown and draw a line under the eye right in the lash line.  Start at the inner corner of the lower lid and draw a thin line that thickens near the outer corner.  Extend the line a little bit beyond the eyes
3)     Brush over the line with a slanted angle brush to soften.  Dip the brush in a charcoal, chocolate, or rich colored shadow.  Draw the shadow over the line and smudge to add dimension.
4)     Apply 2or3 coats of black mascara to balance the line and apply extra to the outer lashes and upper roots.

HOLD THAT TAN - Maintain that sun-touched look all year long with self-tanner on the body and bronzer on the face.  Use a silky mineral powder or bronzer to even out a tan or create one.  Use a powder brush and dust on shoulders, collarbones, and under the chin
Use broad strokes to blend color from the center of your cheeks outward.  Create a natural hollow under      blush by brushing up from the center, between the jaw and cheekbone outward toward the ear.
Create warmth by brushing bronzer at the hairline into the hair a tiny bit.
